RoS directs DAP to hold fresh CEC elections

KUALA LUMPUR: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) has no intention of deregistering DAP, but the party must hold fresh elections for its central executive committee (CEC), said director-general Datuk Mohammad Razin Abdullah (pic).

Mohammad Razin said in a statement Friday that RoS will be issuing a directive to the party to hold a re-election for the 20 CEC members.

The decision was taken following a recent meeting Mohamad Razin had with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Home Minister.

"He (Dr Ahmad Zahid) proposed that any action taken by RoS should be based on the Societies Act 1966 and DAP's constitution.

"I want to stress that RoS recognises DAP as a valid party in the eyes of the law. We have no intention whatsoever to deregister DAP," said Mohammad Razin.

Mohammad Razin said some DAP members had expressed their unhappiness over the re-election process of CEC which was held on Sept 29 2013.

He said based on the complaints, ROS believes that the re-election process of the CEC members and main office bearers was not legally carried out.

The DAP held an election in December 2012 involving 2,576 delegates from 865 branches. Due to complaints of irregularities in this election, a re-election was held in September 2013.

Mohammad Razin explained that the 2013 re-election process should have been carried out based on the 2012 list of delegates who were authorised to attend and vote.

He said it was important for DAP to hold fresh elections to ensure that CEC members are voted in legally.

"Only legal and authorised CEC members can vote for the main officer bearers," he said.
